How Young Lawyers Can Fight to Protect the First Amendment
November 12th | 12:00-1:00 PM | Zoom

As late night TV show hosts are being pulled off the air, news outlets are being sued for their reporting on the Trump administration, and media companies are consolidating into massive corporations, the threat to free speech in the press has never been greater. Longtime media lawyers and free speech advocates Steve Zansberg and Tom Kelley will be speaking on the current threat of government censorship, and how these actions are endangering a central pillar of our democracy. They will outline the legal challenges to these efforts at censorship that are in process or forthcoming, and they will speak about what young lawyers who want to join the fight to protect the First Amendment can do to help.

Steve Zansberg

For 30 years, Steve has represented local and national media companies, online publishers, and individuals in defending claims based on content, fighting subpoenas, and seeking access to government information and proceedings. He represented large coalitions of press outlets in connection with coverage of such events as the federal prosecution of Elizabeth Holmes (Theranos), the sexual assault case against Kobe Bryant, the Aurora theater shooting, and the Oklahoma City bombing trials. He secured access to public records related to the police killing of Elijah McClain, the 1 October shooting massacre in Las Vegas, the mass shooting at Columbine High School, and the murder of JonBenét Ramsey.

Steve is an active leader in the national media law bar. He is a past Chair of the American Bar Association’s Forum on Communications Law, and has chaired several other committees within the ABA and the Media Law Resource Center. Steve also serves on the First Amendment Committee of the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Reporting (SABEW) and as President of the Colorado Freedom of Information Coalition, which educates about and promotes greater transparency in state and local governments.

There is no cost for the event, but registration is required.
