Call for Nominations for 2014–15 DBA Leadership Positions
The Nominating Committee is seeking nominations for the 2014–15 DBA leadership positions, including President-Elect, First and Second Vice Presidents, three members of Board of Trustees, and 11 members of the CBA Board of Governors. Deadline for nominations is Saturday, Feb. 15. For more information or to submit nominations, contact Dana Collier Smith.
Nominate a Friend or Colleague for the DBA Awards by Monday, Feb. 3
The DBA Awards Committee needs your nomination for its annual awards: DBA Award of Merit, DBA Young Lawyer of the Year, DBA Volunteer of the Year, Judicial Excellence, Education in the Legal System and Outstanding Programs or Projects. Nominate an attorney by submitting a statement of why the nominee deserves the honor. The statement need not be a complete essay; just provide a few salient points and the committee will follow up with the nominator and nominee for complete details. You can complete and submit a nomination form online or send your nomination by email to Heather Clark. The committee will consider involvement with the DBA, community contributions outside the bar associations, career history and accomplishments. The deadline for nominations is Monday, Feb. 3.

Preventing Legal Malpractice 2014—Jan. 30 or 31
It’s your choice of the Transactional Practice program on Thursday, Jan. 30, or the Litigation Practice program on Friday, Jan. 31. Topics for both programs include: “Trends in Legal Malpractice: Cases, Statutes, and Rules,” “Ethics and the Use of Technology,” and “Protecting Yourself and Your Firm—What are the Questions to Ask About Insurance Coverage?” Each attendee receives a copy of the CBA-CLE book Lawyers’ Professional Liability in Colorado, 2014 edition. Also, attendance qualifies attendees for a premium credit upon renewal of the CBA-sponsored professional liability insurance. Four ethics credits each.

The Denver Lawyers’ Arts and Literature Contest—Saturday, Feb. 1
Get ready to ignite your creative spark! The Denver Lawyers’ Arts and Literature Contest will begin accepting submissions on Feb. 1. The submission period will run until April 30. The contest includes both writing and visual categories. All DBA members are eligible, except for members of the Docket Committee (who are the judges). Artists may enter previously unpublished work in multiple categories. Learn more here.

 

Trusts in Divorce Property Divisions—Wednesday, Feb. 5
Family Law and Trust and Estate practitioners will learn best practices in this area including: types of statutes of equitable distribution and how they affect the treatment of trust interests; fully distributable remainder interests and In Re Marriage of Balanson; discretionary trusts; In Re Marriage of Jones, In re Marriage of Guinn; whether the concept of vesting has a place in the analysis; how powers of appointment affect the analysis; treatment of income interests, annuity interests and unitrust interests; the controversy regarding irrevocable self-settled trusts; and more! Denver Public Schools Adult Self-Sufficiency Center: Volunteers Needed
The Mile High United Way, Denver Public Schools and DBA are collaborating to implement adult self-sufficiency service programs for the DPS community. The DBA will provide monthly legal clinics in a variety of areas such as family law, immigration, consumer rights, housing and tenant rights. We are looking for attorneys to volunteer to speak in a classroom setting in each topic area. The time commitment for this monthly legal clinic is 1.5 hours. Materials are provided. Please respond to Meghan Bush if you are interested in this new and exciting volunteer opportunity.

Protective Orders Training CLE—Thursday, Feb. 6
The Colorado Women's Bar Association, Colorado Legal Services, Project Safeguard, and the Harris Law Firm present: “Protective Orders Training.” Attend this valuable day of training on Thursday, Feb. 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to learn about the Permanent Protective Orders process, and have the opportunity to gain courtroom experience and make a difference by volunteering for pro bono cases at PPO hearings. Registration is $25 if you agree to accept two pro bono cases; $100 if you do not accept cases; registration fee waived for law students. Register online. Become a Museum Ambassador at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science
The Denver Museum of Nature and Science is looking for volunteers! These volunteers will help the Museum in greeting guests when they first arrive, guiding guests and visitors throughout the Museum, answering phones at the information desk, and more.
