The Many Sides of Immigration Law: Know How It Crosscuts Practice Areas—Thursday, Nov. 21

Movie Night CLE: “Miracle on 34th Street”—Tuesday, Dec. 3
James Garts and Becky Bye will be conducting a CLE-accredited program related to the movie “Miracle on 34th Street.” The discussion will focus on ethical issues associated with representing clients with competency issues. Additionally, there will be some discussion on federal and state pre-emption issues (this issue plays a pivotal role in the movie). This fun and informative movie night will be held at the DBA-CLE offices, 1900 Grant St., 3rd floor, starting at 5:30 p.m. Pizza and refreshments will be provided. One ethics CLE credit available. Bench-Bar Event: Learn the Nuts and Bolts of Protective and Restraining Orders—Thursday, Dec. 5
Take advantage of this unique opportunity to discuss everything you have ever wanted to know about protective and restraining orders in Colorado. Mentoring Program—Deadline for Applications is Friday, Dec. 6
We are accepting applications for the 2014 year for the DBA mentoring program for both Mentors and Mentees. Applications can be found here. Applications are due no later than 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6. The program is limited to DBA members. If you previously served as a mentor, there’s no need to complete the application; simply send an e-mail with your interest and area of practice to Melissa Nicoletti.
Support MVL on Colorado Gives Day—Tuesday, Dec. 10
The DBA’s Metro Volunteer Lawyers is participating in Colorado Gives Day, which aims to support nonprofits that protect and nurture quality of life in Colorado. For 24 hours—starting at midnight on Dec. 10—donations will be taken online to endorse local nonprofits such as MVL. One hundred percent of your donation will go to MVL, supporting its mission to provide free and low-cost legal services to people in need. For more information or to donate, click here.
Deposition Techniques and Strategy with David Markowitz—Thursday, Dec. 12
For more than 30 years, David Markowitz has been studying deposition and trial techniques. He has presented seminars to improve the skills of practicing attorneys across the country. Markowitz shares 10 important goals to accomplish, including avoiding undesired results. Learn the value of questions structure and how to deal with evasive and incomplete answers. How to Green a Law Firm—Thursday, Dec. 12
Join us for a half-day presentation about the CBA’s Environmental Sustainability Program on Thursday, Dec. 12, beginning at 11 a.m. Hear from experts how to institute a paperless office, use energy and water more wisely, and track your energy use. Throughout the program, you will learn why a sustainable law practice is good not only for the environment, but also is professionally responsible and economically efficient. “How to Green a Law Firm” will be held at the Ralph L. Carr Judicial Center, a LEED Gold-certified building. There is an optional tour of the building’s green features before the program. Lawyers’ League Basketball Sign-up Deadline is Monday, Dec. 2
The Lawyers’ Basketball League will kick off its 2013 season in January. It will be held at the University of Denver Hamilton Gym. The expected team entry fee will range from $600 to $700. Sign-up information was sent to last year’s team captains; others who are interested in registering, forming, or joining a team should contact Todd Jansen or Rob Hooke.

The DBA Fit to Practice Task Force will host a Health Fair on Thursday, Jan. 9, at the DBA offices, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Look for health screening services, a nutritional expert, an acupuncturist, and a massage therapist—as well as healthy food and beverages. This is the perfect place to jump start your 2014 fitness goals and gear up for the DBA’s Fitness Challenge supporting the Sean May Memorial Run and Wheels of Justice Courage Classic.
