The Impact of Colorado’s Civil Unions Act on Estate Planning

In the past twenty years, Colorado has gone from being dubbed the “hate state” for its discrimination against same-sex individuals (See Romer v. Evans, 517 U.S. 620 (1996)) to allowing civil unions. Beginning at midnight on May 1, 2013, same-sex couples will be able to enter into civil unions. A number of legal benefits, protections, and responsibilities that are granted to spouses under the law apply to parties to a civil union. Read more…

Law Day

Young Lawyers Division Law Day Movie Night Featuring “Lincoln”—TONIGHT
Celebrate Law Day with the Denver and Colorado Bar Associations’ Young Lawyer Divisions at the Mayan Theater on May 1, at 5 p.m. Denver District Court Judge John Madden will give a CLE presentation on President Abraham Lincoln, followed by a showing of the 2012 Oscar-winning film, “Lincoln.” One general CLE credit has been applied for. Cost to attend is $15. This event is for members and their significant others only. RSVP online or email

DBA Young Lawyers Division Law Day Reception—Thursday, May 2
Join the DBA Young Lawyers Division and Vincent E. Morscher, head of the attorney general’s Civil Litigation and Employment Law Department, and Steve Chavez, director of the Colorado Civil Rights Division, for a cocktail reception at The Lobby beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 2. Morscher and Chavez will present briefly on the Law Day theme, “Realizing the Dream: Equality for All.” Admission is free and includes appetizers and two drink tickets. Social Networking: An Ethical Minefield—Thursday, May 23
As licensed professionals, it is critical to be mindful of responsibilities in interactions with others, including those that occur electronically or via social media. Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn. There may be dangers for lawyers who may be unaware of the interaction between the use of social media and their responsibilities under the Rules of Professional Conduct. 8th Annual Attorney’s Night Out—Thursday, June 27
Join the DBA YLD as they celebrate The Legal Center for People with Disabilities and Older People's protection of the rights of people with disabilities and older people in Colorado since 1976. Areas of law addressed commonly include Immigration, Family, Criminal, Housing, Consumer and bankruptcy, and Employment.
