Message from the DBA YLD Chair

Dear Colleagues,

A cornerstone of our mission at the Denver Bar Association is to support and assist attorneys in Denver. I’m writing you today to invite you to a special complimentary presentation sponsored by the DBA about student loan debt relief.

We at the Denver Bar Association understand that times are tough — particularly for attorneys who have just passed the bar — and the rising cost of attending law school has left many in our legal community with considerable debt. We hope this program will offer the first steps for attorneys with student loan debt to get a grip on it and find a solution that best fits them.

Getting a Grip on Your Student Loans will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at the Denver office of Holland and Hart. A light lunch will be provided. Please RSVP to lunches@cobar.org. Space is limited, RSVP today!

From this presentation you’ll be able to determine what kind of loans you have and why it makes a difference; evaluate whether you can benefit from the new Pay As You Earn, income-based repayment, and other options; and learn simple steps to qualify for public service loan forgiveness.

The speaker, Heather Jarvis, knows what it’s like to carry this kind of debt. A former capital defense attorney with law school debt, Ms. Jarvis now dedicates her expertise to helping student loan borrowers make better decisions so that higher education can be a reality for all — not just those who can afford it. In addition to providing guidance and information to thousands of students and recent graduates, she has contributed to student debt relief policy for the House Education Committee and others in Congress, and spent more than six years advocating for public service loan forgiveness, which allows more recent graduates to dedicate their careers to the greater good.

Navigating the various repayment options for student loan debt can be confusing; let us help you sort it out so you can focus on your practice. I hope you’ll consider joining us.

Sincerely yours,

Jake C. Eisenstein
2012–13 DBA YLD Chair
