U.S. District Court Local Rules Revisions Effective Dec. 1

The United States District Court for the District of Colorado reviewed and approved revisions to its Local Rules which became effective Dec. 1. The Advisory Committee on the Local Rules of Practice and Procedure continues its comprehensive review of the local rules. In the 2014 rules cycle the Committee focused on the restyling of the local criminal rules, updating the rules applicable to members of the bar, and converting pilot programs to local rules.

All members of the bar and the public are advised that the Advisory Committee will conduct a community forum at the Alfred A. Arraj U.S. District Courthouse sometime in January 2015, the date to be determined. The Advisory Committee looks forward to providing an opportunity at the forum to answer inquiries about the recent rule revisions.

The Advisory Committee on the Local Rules always welcomes comments from court users, members of the bar, and the public at large. Please send your comments or suggestions to: LocalRule_Comments@cod.uscourts.gov.

Frederick Skillern: Real Estate Case Law—Condemnation, Eminent Domain

The only question for a trial to a panel of three commissioners is, in most cases, the value of property taken by the government. The question raised here, however, is whether the standard of review on the disqualification motion is based on the standard applicable to a judge, or a juror. Click here to read more.

Tip of the Week From the LPM Department

Use a Microsoft Template to Create Legal Pleading Paper With Numbers Down the Side (And Budgets, Resumes, Marketing Materials, etc.)

Some courts require old-school "pleading paper" with the line numbers down the left-hand side of the page. It can be very tricky to create this on your own. Why spend the time when there's a free pleading paper template you can download! Check this out for a template. Although it says it's for Office 2013, it worked for me in 2010. While you're there, check out the other templates. There are hundreds of templates that have been posted for free download. They're organized by category to make it easier, and you'll find templates for both personal and business use.
