F

or the first time, the Denver Bar Association’s Access to Justice Committee will highlight pro bono work done by Denver attorneys during Member Appreciation Week — the theme of which is "Pro Bono — Paying it Forward."

Pro Bono is the phrase du jour at the DBA and around the state. The Colorado Supreme Court encourages a minimum of 50 hours of pro bono service for each attorney and recognizes those individuals and law firms who succeed in meeting this annual challenge. DBA Immediate Past President Ilene Bloom focused her term on pro bono and launched a "match-making" service, the DBA Pro Bono Initiative, which works to pair individual attorneys with pro bono opportunities that align with their interests and time.

The DBA’s ATJ Committee wants you to join this growing trend, too. The committee will kick off Member Appreciation Week with a CLE packed with dynamic Ignite presentations that will introduce guests to new and ongoing opportunities to volunteer their legal expertise. During these presentations, which are fast-paced and under five minutes, information will be presented about the DBA ATJ Committee, as well as the clinics its members run, county court mediation work, and the myriad legal services needed for indigent people in Denver. The event will run from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, June 3, at CBA-CLE offices, 1900 Grant St., Suite 300. There is no cost to attend, and snacks, beer, and wine will be provided. Donations benefitting Metro Volunteer Lawyers will be accepted and greatly appreciated.

The DBA ATJ Committee is comprised of Denver-area lawyers committed to finding ways to help underrepresented people secure legal information, advice, and representation. It is the local chapter of the Colorado Access to Justice Commission. The committee sponsors multiple clinics providing "how-to" advice on topics ranging from presenting a case in small claims court to collecting child support or filing for bankruptcy. Additionally, the committee co-sponsors twice-monthly legal nights for the community, hosts various CLEs throughout the year, and provides support for Metro Volunteer Lawyers and Colorado Legal Services.

Other events throughout Member Appreciation Week include an electronics recycling event on June 7, whose donations will benefit Metro Volunteer Lawyers; the 20th anniversary edition of Lawline 9, an ask-a-lawyer call-in program sponsored by the DBA and 9News, on June 5; and the DBA Annual Party, where those dedicated to the DBA and serving the community will be recognized, on June 6. See a full listing of the week’s events on pages 20 and 21.

Throughout the week, the DBA ATJ Committee will highlight its mission and the many different volunteer opportunities that are available to Denver-area lawyers.
