Former Chief Justice, DBA President Luis Rovira Dies at 88 ![]()
he Docket Committee was greatly saddened by the news that former Colorado Chief Justice Luis D. Rovira passed away on Oct. 30. He was 88. Rovira, who was president of the Denver Bar Association from 1970 to 1971, served on Colorado’s highest court for 16 years, from 1979 to 1995, and was Chief Justice for the last five. He is probably best known for penning the opinion in Romer v. Evans, which overturned Amendment 2, a voter-approved amendment that prevented the state and local governments from passing laws protecting gays and lesbians.
After leaving the Colorado Supreme Court, Rovira never slowed down. He continued to serve as a Senior Justice for the Colorado Court of Appeals, and provided mediation and arbitration services for the Judicial Arbiter Group. He remained active with the DBA and was roasted by its Seniors Committee in October 2006. He is survived by his wife, Lois Ann, two children, and six grandchildren, according to The Denver Post. We at the DBA offer our condolences to the family for their loss. D Back | ||||||||
