Rebecca Watson, an attorney at Welborn Sullivan Meck & Tooley and former Assistant Secretary for Lands and Minerals Management of the U.S. Department of the Interior, has been named the A.T. Smith/Gerald J. Schissler Distinguished Natural Resources Practitioner-in-Residence at the University of Denver’s Sturm College of Law. 

Community First Foundation appointed Marla J. Williams as its new chief executive officer on Nov. 15.

The Colorado–Wyoming Chapter of the National MS Society conferred emeritus status on former board trustee

Rothgerber Johnson & Lyons LLP is proud to announce that Pope Benedict XVI has granted Charles Goldberg the Benemerenti ("To a Well Deserving Person") Medal. The award was conferred by Archbishop Charles Chaput during Mass on Nov. 7 at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Goldberg is the first such recipient of this award from outside the Catholic community in more than a quarter century.

Jonathan G. Pray, an associate at the law firm of Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, recently was named to the Historic Denver Inc. Board of Trustees. As a board member, he will help the nonprofit preserve historic structures and neighborhoods in Denver through implementation of programs and oversight of staff.

Denver bankruptcy attorney Matt McCune was honored by the Denver Police Department and The Daniels Fund on Oct. 26 for coming to the aid of a woman who was being attacked by her boyfriend. When McCune, who was out walking his dogs, tried to intervene, he was stabbed in the neck. He is recovering and back to work, according to news reports.

Holme Roberts & Owen LLP and Larry Theis, a partner and Chair of HRO’s Executive Committee, were selected as the 2010 leadership competition award winners from the Center for Legal Inclusiveness at its annual roundtable on Nov. 4. Theis implemented an action item that called for his law firm to make inclusiveness a same-level priority as other firm business initiatives.

As the competition award winner, Theis’ charity of choice – Make-A-Wish Foundation – received the $5,000 cash award.

Thanks to those who celebrated Pro Bono Week

Kicking off Pro Bono Week, Oct. 24–30, a special morning Law Line 9 was held Oct. 25. We want to thank , Terrence Burke, Charles Garcia, Erica Longnecker, William O’Rourke, and Mandy Yick for volunteering their time in the early hours that morning.

On Oct. 28, Faegre & Benson, LLP hosted a Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network U-Visa Training for volunteers of Metro Volunteer Lawyers.

On Oct. 30, volunteer lawyers met at Martin Luther King, Jr. Library in Aurora to speak to the Burmese and Nepalese communities on topics including immigration, employment, criminal, workers’ comp, and landlord–tenant issues. This informational clinic was sponsored by the Asian Pacific American Bar Association. We thank: Ilene Bloom, Harry Budisidharta, Catherine Chan, James Chiu, Nick Fogel, Iris Halpern, Dennis Kaw, Rita Kittle, Matt O’Brien, Siddharta Rathod, Kelly Ryan, and Kristi Walton. Special thanks to Aurora Central High School junior and Mock Trial Team star, Shiva Sapkota. Shiva personally brought the Nepalese community and also delivered proficient verbal and written translation.

Letters by DBA President Stacy Carpenter and Denver Access to Justice Committee Chairs Alison Daniels and Jennifer Levin were sent to firms to acknowledge National Pro Bono Week as a time to thank members of the Denver legal community who donate thousands of hours in free legal services, and to those volunteers who take cases at Metro Volunteer Lawyers.
