"Colorado is an interesting state for courthouse architecture. Some of its county capitols are very Modern and others are Victorian monuments. Aside from courthouses, I’ve really enjoyed the geography of Colorado as a great mix of the small town atmosphere of the American Great Plains in the east — and the amazing beauty of the Rocky Mountains in the west."
— Jordan McAlister

When the Docket Committee first heard the title of this web-based photo archive at Flickr.com, more than a few pairs of ears perked up, overeager perhaps for a more sexy subject.

However, there’s no doubting the devotion of photographer Jordan McAlister.

Traveling across the country, the early 20-something history buff has visited more than 1,100 county seats in 24 states. These tallies include 41 of Colorado’s 64 counties.

"I love county and parish courthouses, and I love to travel. Each part of the United States has some outstanding and unique courthouses. From the Prairie-style courthouses in the Great Plains to the antebellum beauties of the Southeast, and the Romanesque masterpieces of Texas and the Midwest to the Mission style structures of the Southwest, they are all national treasures," says McAlister on the site.

"I have tried to post photographs from my travels, along with brief descriptions in an attempt to provide the Internet with more information on the structures and locations around the United States that most interest me," says McAlister. "The information out there for county courthouses, federal courthouses, post offices, and Carnegie libraries seems to be lacking, at least in part, and I hope that the information that I provide here will be valuable to cultural or heritage tourists."

Although some information about the courthouses might not be correct, McAlister has generated conversations about architecture, local history and sense of place across the country. That’s because viewers are encouraged to post responses to the photos on Flickr.com.
