Public Legal Education
The Public Legal Education Department and volunteers participated in the annual Colorado Civic Education Conference on Dec. 8. Volunteers conducted two sessions for civic teachers across the state. Marvin and Camille Ventrell presented, "Coaching High School Mock Trial: Competition, Education and Defining Success." This session included an overview of a high school mock trial round, discussion of the essential trial skills students must acquire and other techniques. DBA President-Elect Elsa T. Martinez Tenreiro, David P. Cain, Brad Hill (pictured at left) and Bill Walters presented the session, "The Case of Spongebob Roundpants & Other Elementary Mock Trial Scripts." This session taught teachers how elementary and middle school in-class mock trials can be used in the classroom to teach about the judiciary and division of powers.
CASA Holiday Party
On Dec. 16, the Mile High Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators held its second annual holiday party for the kids in the Denver Court Appointed Special Advocates program. The day was filled with games and fun for the children, and even a visit from Santa Claus! Money was raised so that every child who attended was able to receive a gift. This year was very special, thanks to all the volunteers. Jason McCord, director of administration at Semple Miller Mooney & Farrington, and one of the organizers of the event, thanked the Denver Bar Association for its support of the event, which helped to make it a great day for the children.
