Christmas in January
It's time to start planning for this YLD annual event that provides holiday gifts and a party to foster children under 12 years old. Christmas in January will be Jan. 20, 2001. Volunteers are needed to prepare for this fun day. There will be volunteer meetings on Nov. 13 and Dec. 11 at 6 p.m. at the DBA offices, 1900 Grant St., Ninth Floor. If you can help contact Nora Nye at (303) 825-2088 or nora@minnig.com. Winetasting to Benefit Legal Aid Taste exquisite wines at the Seventh Annual Young Lawyers Division Winetasting to Benefit the Legal Aid Foundation on Dec. 6 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at La Rumba, 99 W. Ninth Ave. Last year's tasting raised over $3,000, which provided free civil legal aid to about 18,000 disadvantaged families, elderly and disabled persons, and victims of domestic violence. Everyone is welcome--not just young lawyers! Tickets are $25 in advance or $28 at the door. Join YLD for wines from Lucas Liquors, excellent food from local Denver restaurants, a silent auction and good music. Show your support for the Legal Aid Foundation while getting gift ideas for the holidays and answers to your questions about wine. Bring your friends for a wonderful time! For tickets, call (303) 863-9544. See you December 6! Governance Column The Docket will be featuring this column every month to inform members of some of the important decisions the big dogs make at the Colorado and Denver Bar Associations. On Sept. 7, DBA President and CBA Board of Governors Board Member Susan Smith Fisher made a motion that the CBA endorse Ballot Initiative 22, which calls for background checks at gun shows. After further discussion, the motion to endorse the closing of the gun show loophole passed with a vote of 46 to 28. On Sept. 14, at the Board of Trustees meeting, the DBA also agreed to endorse the initiative on the general election ballot in November 2000. Colorado Attorney General Ken Salazar recently approached the CBA with a proposal to expand the bar's Domestic Violence Program, which teaches Colorado employees and employers about the impact of domestic violence on women in the workplace. This expansion would be funded by a $446,703 award that resulted from a multistate, antitrust settlement against the Nine West shoe corporation. The CBA Board of Governors and DBA Board of Trustees meetings are always open to the membership. Call Jan Santopietro at (303) 824-5340 to find out when the next meeting is. Family Law Court 2001 Metro Volunteer Lawyers is recruiting volunteer attorneys to assist indigent clients at their dissolution of marriage and allocation of parental responsibility hearings in Denver, Jefferson, Adams and Arapahoe counties in 2001. If you would like to participate in this monthly program or receive additional information about Metro Volunteer Lawyers, call Tony Damon at (303) 866-9375. Literary Anthology Submissions sought for a DBA/CBA anthology of short stories by Colorado lawyers. Send your no-more-than-3,000-word story to DBA/CBA Literary Anthology, c/o Karen Bries, 1900 Grant St., Ninth Floor, Denver, CO 80203. If you are already moderately famous, feel free to submit a previously published story. Entries will be determined by a committee. Submissions are due Dec. 31. Contact Karen Bries at (303) 824-5303 or kbries@cobar.org for more information.
It's that time of the year again. Join your friends and colleagues at the Annual Seniors Holiday Party on Dec. 13 at noon. Enjoy a hot lunch, camaraderie and seasonal cheer at the Denver Bar Association offices. R.S.V.P. by sending a check for $12, made out to the DBA, to Molly Osberg, 1900 Grant St., Ninth Floor, Denver, CO 80203. Molly can also be reached at (303) 824-5347 or mosberg@cobar.org.
